Failure ≠ Dumb Idea

Iranian Government Cracks Down on Protesters

Violently suppressing peaceful protests is going to be bad PR for anyone.  But the mullahs in Iran already have an international reputation as reactionary nut-jobs.  Would it have killed them to simply wait a couple weeks? Better yet, they could have held new elections to underscore their legitimacy.
